Below is a list of the birds we have identified on St. John. If the name appears as a link, you can click on the link to view a picture of the bird.
On Wednesday we had an introduction to the birdlife on the islands. There are about 60 resident species , 11 introduced species and about 129 possible migrants for a total of nearly 200 species possible on the island. Habitat destruction has taken it's toll on the birdlife here. In about 1877-1879 the mongoose was introduced to help to try and control the introduced rat population that was decimating the sugar cane. Now the mongoose is a threat to the native bird population as it eats the eggs and young. Pesticides like DDT took their toll on the Brown Pelicans but since DDT was banned they have made a nice comeback and are common sights on the island. We took a bird walk around the Mary's Point Salt Pond. Check our Birdlist below for a list of all the bird species we have seen. We will continue to add to the list as we sight other species. You will also see the date they were sighted and the location. |
