At the end of each night's class we, as a group, reflect on our 'Picture of the Day.' The Picture of the Day is a snapshot of some event during the day that made an impression on us that we describe to the group. To facilitate our sharing we pass around our mascott Leinster, pictured here. Whomever has Leinster has the floor and the group's attention.

Diana Bowen My picture of the day was seeing the Queen Angelfish. Its colors were so magnificent. It looked as though it should have been plugged into an electrical outlet to get its bright colors. It moved so gracefully and its shape was really neat. A couple of his friends were swimming with him to. Seeing them in a group was a great experience as well.
Ryan Lewis "Being in the Virgin Islands and having nothing to do" Trevor and I sat on the couch on the second day with nothing to do. We had already eaten lunch and had no other plans for a while. We ended up sitting for two and a half hours doing nothing. The setting was so calm and serene that we fought to stay awake. As we both lie there drifting in and out of consciousness, we felt obligated to do something, but couldnšt bring ourselves to waste the energy.
Trevor Spock "The Look on Ryan's face when we saw a "Hairy Snyder" while snorkeling" It was a look of absolute horror and disgust. Ryan seemed to be revolted and yet at the same time, he had some bit of interest in what he had just seen.
Suzanne Wardle "Look, guys! A pelican!" For me, the best picture was on the first day when about five or six of us saw a brown pelican dive down into the shallows and emerge gulping down a fish. It was marvelous to see one so close, merely feet away. It rose from the waters, then dived down again. It caught another fish, threw back its head, and gobbled it down. Perhaps it was satisfied after this, for it rose up and flew away. Considering they have such stubby little bodies, pelicans can move pretty quickly.
Adam Kaucher My picture of the day was seeing Tim and Owen wrestling around in the water. Owen took Tim under the water and Tim swallowed some of the water. He spent the next five minutes throwing it up and being upset. It was funny.
Doug Clinton Today after having lunch at Melody and Katie's cabin, my group returned to our cabin to find our archenemies, the Snowmen, in our cabin. When they saw us they ran and jumped over our balcony trying to get away, but we spotted them hiding. They then came back into our cabin and notified us that there were hermit crabs partying in our beds. Mr. Chilton called it "The oldest trick in the book."
Dave Campeau While snorkeling I saw a 2-foot long barracuda. It was quite intimidating and also quick and fast. I also saw a sea anenome that was slightly bigger than a basketball. This was also very intimidating considering it had huge spikes.
David Mellert While night snorkeling, Trevor was swam into an anchored boat. He didn't hear the warnings that Greg, Ryan and I were shouting at him.
Christina Hahn I have seen many new and interesting types of animal and plant life since I have been here, which is something that is good enough to be my picture of the day, but it isn't. The best thing that I have seen so far was seeing Holly jump out of her seat and scream because a little frog was near by. It was really funny because the frog was about 15 feet away from her. The view and the weather here is also a picture of the day.
Matt Lebo Today while on the beach I saw a pelican circling around the water. He then swooped down diving his head into the water. He held his under for a moment, and then brought it back above the surface. After that he jerked his head back and forth and swallowed the fish that was in his gull
Kate Fischer When a group of us (Amanda Baker, Casey Hart, Holly McDonald, Cindy Hill, Christina Hahn, and I) were exploring the shoreline of Little Maho Bay, we had the opportunity to see an eel. Some man, from Philadelphia no less, snorkeling by found it buried in the sand; he was kind enough to lend us his mask so we all could see it, but Casey got the closest view because it snapped out at her.
Martha Nielsen I went snorkeling for the first time every today. Just seeing all the fish and actually being able to name some of them was pretty cool. But the best thing I was an octopus. We were in little Maho and I almost passed it by because it looked just like the coral. Fortunately I saw its eyes and I stayed to look at it for a bit and I got a picture.
JARED DVORNICKY To be quite honest, it would be impossible to snap the highlights of my day into one mere polaroid. My greatest fun of the day was encompassed by our adventurous snorkeling expedition from Little Maho around the point to Big Maho. I was enchanted by the variety of coral and especially fish I observed. I could not help but continue to snap of pictures until my camera was put to the "max".
TIM ALLEN Hi, just writing this letta to give yall a little taste of whats shakin in my life. Well first off we got crazy fishies up in this mofo and I've seen a lot of them. As well as seeing and learning a lot of stuff, a lot of fun has been had. Me and my fellow snowmen have created a little ruckus against our fellow marine researchaz involving some naughty wildlife and some unwanted snacks (all in good fun). Also we have shared some sweet times snorkeling and kicken it on the beach. All in all I got mad love for this place and mad activities to accomplish. Keep it real in PA. And to all my special peeps, remember..one luv.
Chris Benner This morning, my cabin went snorkeling in Maho Bay. We surprised ourselves by correctly identifying many tropical fish and coral. After our swim, we went to our cabin and tried to make Mac. And Cheese that Chilton gave us. It turned into a paste while it was cooking so we threw it out for the crabs and lizards.
Cindy Hill So far, the sight that I have enjoyed the most is watching the sun set. The sky was a beautiful mixture of pastel colors and the sun was slowly lowering over the clear blue water. It was just amazing to watch, and was much better than the sunsets in Pennsylvania!
Holly McDonald Today was our official first day in the Islands. We went out to the beach at 9 am to snorkel. I was a little freaked out because I had never done it before, but it was a lot easier than I imagined. The Islands are gorgeous. The water is crystal clear and bright turquoise. While snorkeling we saw so many tropical fish. All of them are bright colored. My favorites so far are Blueheads and Sergeant Majors. Some of us saw Barracudas, and I can't wait to see one myself. By the way, the jerks told me the frog was on my chair and the lizard was in my shower.
Melissa DeAngelo My picture of the day was this morning. Our Bio class went snorkeling. It was my first time so I really enjoyed it. Well my picture is getting to be up and close with the fish in their natural habitat. It's so much different from seeing them in a bowl or tank.
Casey Hart Yesterday was our first official day in the islands. I was just swimming in the bay with some friends when some guy came up to me with a mask and asked me if I wanted to see an eel. I said sure, but when he gave me his mask and I put my face in the water, I saw the scariest little fishy face poking out of the sand and biting at me. It was so not cool, but I'll never forget that eel.
Owen Breininger First of all I'd like to say that the islands are sooo much better then Kintersville. Me and my fellow snowmen are dominating the color reefs down here and are the masters of snorkeling. Today I was successful in capturing a lizard that was running around my cabin and there is a giant peacock that wonders around the campground. I hope the baseball team beat Salisbury today! HI Laura!
Ryan Schock Well there is so many good things about the islands. It is pretty hard just to pick one thing. I guess that if I had to pick one it would be when we went outside of our cabin this morning and there were enormous hermit crabs under our deck. Matt Lebo may have had something to do with it. Oh well hello to everyone that's back home.
James Hunt First off, the islands are great, but they are no UBE. Today while snorkeling, I got to see some reaally cool fish. The coolest thing I have seen was a queen angelfish. I followed him around underwater for a while, until he went in to a cave. I was a little disappointed, but he scared up a red snapper, so I just watched him.
Greg Scheitrum Ok, well something I saw that was really cool was when I was swimming out by some rocks. I was swimming over a very tall one, and there was only a couple of feet between me and the rock. I was concentrating on the fish around the rock and on not touching the rock with my fins. As I scanned the top of the rock, suddenly it fell away, and I was starring down into 15-20 feet of water. It struck me that it happened so suddenly and that I didn't notice. The beach and water here are so much clearer and brighter than the beaches I'm used to. Being able to track a fish from 10 feet above it is a very cool experience.
Amanda Baker This morning we went snorkeling. I saw a lot of really cool fish in the coral. I saw a barracuda that was about 2 feet long. I also saw these really small fish cleaning off a blue tang. There were a lot of sea urchins down there and fire coral. There were some really pretty angelfish too. There were queen, gray, banded and french angelfish. They were the prettiest things I saw all day except for the sunrise.
Sue Ebling I had another great day down here. The weather is wonderful (very hot when you do very physical activities though). I enjoyed snorkling in Little Maho Bay the most today. The water was delicious. I saw many more fishes than I had yesterday. Some of them include: Fairy Basslet, Stoplight Parrotfish, Bluehead, and Banded Butterflyfish. I anticipate more fun days ahead.
